Ajaccio

Tucked into a bay on the west coast of Corsica, Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon -- you’ll see his likeness all over town. The main shopping drag, Cours Napoleon, and the tree-lined boulevards, parks and squares feature many statues of the French leader. In the Old Town, between the port and the striking fortifications on the cliff above, you can visit the Bonaparte family home and the cathedral in which Napoleon was baptized.

In the marketplace by the port you can shop for local crafts and goods (and Napoleon-related souvenirs). Ajaccio is a perfect launching point for explorations of the French island. On drives through the countryside, you’ll see that the roads are lined with the dry, scrubby, sweetly perfumed vegetation known as maquis -- giving Corsica its nickname, the “Scented Isle.”
