This picturesque port sits on the northwest coast of the Italian island of Sardinia, yet it has Catalan flair, thanks to a long-ago time when the town was occupied by traveling merchants from Barcelona. The cuisine and language reflects this Spanish heritage. Must-see sights include the San Francesco church, which sports a ceramic dome and Gothic bell tower, and the Magdalena Fort, which overlooks the narrow cobbled lanes that wind through the heart of the old town near the cruise port. The surrounding countryside is home to olive groves and vineyards, and the Capo Caccia headland offers great views of the coast. Travelers also can visit Nuraghe Palmavera, an interesting prehistoric site comprised of 50 circular “cottages” constructed of stone.
