Almeria, Spain, is well-located in the middle of a Mediterranean bay, offering easy access to some alluring sandy beaches and coves. It bears a diverse history, too, shaped by the presence of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors who occupied the region at various times.

The 10th-century Alcazaba, an Arab fortress, stands upon a mountain and provides a stunning backdrop to the city; head here for the best views. A cathedral, which sports a mix of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, also once served as a fortress. Visitors often like to walk through Nicolas Salmeron Park and then venture to the caves in the old gypsy quarter. In the charming old town, look for fine leather in the shops and sample local wines and culinary specialties in the cafes. If you head inland to the lush countryside, you’ll see Moorish remains that date to when the area was part of the kingdom of Granada.
