Volcanic black-sand beaches line the shores of this sunny capital, set on the northern side of Samoa’s most populous island, Upolu. Wooden colonial buildings loop through Apia, circling modern structures like the National University of Samoa. Robert Louis Stevenson passed the last few years of his life just south of the city, wandering the expansive grounds of his estate, Vailima; a museum dedicated to the author and his works is now housed here. In addition, hopping market areas, a historic observatory and parliament house lure travelers in need of a tour; otherwise, day-long hikes into the surrounding forest occupy most visitors to the city.
