This Jordanian city is often used as a launching pad for trips to Petra, the “rose red” fortress city hidden by a desert gorge. Though its exact age is a matter of great debate, some believe that Petra might be the city referred to as “Sela” in the Bible’s Old Testament. Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts have been found in this region, too. Modern visitors will find an architectural marvel -- a city hewn from a towering red cliff that shelters ancient tombs, temples and an impressive amphitheatre.
