Historic ties to the British Empire have earned this isle the nickname “Little England.” Barbados’ colonial history dates to the early 1600s, and a British influence can be felt in the local architecture, attitudes and system of government; still, as a nation independent since 1966, the island now is known for its own unique, blended culture.

It’s also known as a beach bum’s paradise. Barbados offers a bit of everything – on its Atlantic side, pounding waves lure surfers; to the south and west, white sands wait for sunbathers; and, on the northern side of the island, coral creates sheltered swimming coves. Each stretch of sand offers beach bars and alfresco restaurants, lending Barbados a reputation as a Caribbean party capital.

Visitors are drawn to Bridgetown, Barbados’ primary cruise port and bustling capital city, where colonial sites and parliamentary buildings dot a charming and compact metropolis. Wildlife preserves and other natural sanctuaries can be explored through day trips outside the city.
