You’ll find a lively blend of old and contemporary in this Catalonian capital on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. It’s best known, however, for the whimsical buildings of art nouveau architect Antoni Gaudi, among them the Sagrada Familia, an extraordinary but still unfinished cathedral. Other Gaudi creations include the Casa Mila and Casa Batllo, both located on an avenue called Passeig de Gracia.

Barcelona received a tourism boost after hosting the 1992 Olympic Games; the Old Port was spruced up into an attractive district with cafes and restaurants. It’s possible to walk from there to the famous pedestrian-only La Rambla, where you’ll find engaging street performers and numerous stalls selling flowers and handicrafts; it’s especially active at night and on weekends.

Foodies will want to seek out La Boqueria food market, with its tantalizing displays of fruit, vegetables, seafood and meat. Some of Spain’s best cuisine can be found in Barcelona. Paella is a specialty, and tapas bars are beloved for their small dishes of tasty bites.
