The ancient Italian capital of Bari on the Adriatic Sea is one of Italy’s least exploited gems. Often passed over by visitors, this evocative and architecturally well-appointed city is the heir to a rich cosmopolitan heritage, with every civilization from Greek to Arabic to Byzantine having made its historical mark here.

The town is divided by a wide boulevard, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where you can find the well-regarded red brick government palace and the Teatro Piccinni, which still hosts concerts. The Old Town is a labyrinth of alleyways, arches and ancient churches. Here you can find the Basilica of St. Nicholas, the imposing Castello Svevo and the 12th-century Cathedral of San Sabino.

South of the city is Murattiano, home to a striking seaside promenade and a couple of large shopping thoroughfares, Via Argiro and Via Sparano. Not far outside the Bari city limits is the Castel del Monte, an intriguing 13th-century octagonal castle, which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
