Perched on the edge of Lille Lungegardsvann Lake, the second largest city in Norway is a picturesque port framed by sparkling waters and towering mountain peaks. It’s a fitting gateway to “Fjordland,” Norway’s stunning backcountry -- a breathtaking, photo-worthy introduction to the mountain scenery that waits beyond the city limits. But Bergen engages the mind as well as the eye. Art galleries join fine restaurants and family-owned pubs in charming harborfront neighborhoods. Historic sites, including features dating to early Viking occupation, draw history buffs. A stand of 11th-century structures has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, complete with an engaging museum that explores Bergen’s earliest inhabitants. Other attractions include the former home of composer Edvard Grieg and a bustling fish market and bazaar beside the entrance port.
