In Italy, Cagliari is the aesthetically dazzling main port and capital of Sardinia. Rome seized it from its Carthaginian founders in the Punic Wars, and one can still see signs of this legacy in the churches, monuments and museums full of ancient artifacts. Important structures left behind from the Roman days include an amphitheater and an aqueduct. You can see a lot of the key sights of Cagliari just by walking around the walled Castello area, with its crooked, twisting alleys opening onto wide-open piazzas. The city’s botanical garden teems with more than 500 species of plants and is well worth a visit. Every day but Sunday you can browse a thriving covered market just north of the Castello, while down on the marina there is an impressive variety of restaurants -- mostly places that specialize in seafood, but also an assortment of beachfront bars, ice cream vendors and pizzerias. The best beaches are to be found 15 minutes outside Cagliari, at Poetto.
