This UNESCO World Heritage Site on the northern coast of Colombia is a treasure trove of centuries-old architecture. History buffs might start their tours of the city with the 16th-century stronghold of San Felipe de Barajas, the largest Spanish fort in the New World, and follow up with a hike to La Popa, a 400-year-old hilltop monastery and the host of frequent music festivals. Cartagena’s downtown area is still encased by protective walls, a must during the pirate raids that plagued the city in the late 1500s and early 1600s.

But new attractions await here, too, from the shining shopping centers of Bocagrandes, a recent addition to the city, to the state-of-the-art scuba centers at the edge of town. Pristine beaches are another draw here, as are the nearby Coral Islands of Rosario. Flea markets, craft fairs and jewelry stores -- especially those stocking the region’s favorite gemstone, the vibrant emerald -- also are popular stops for tourists in need of a unique souvenir.
