This Australian territory is known more for its underwater residents than the few human inhabitants (less than 2,000, according to government statistics) who welcome cruise passengers ashore. Whale sharks, spinner dolphins and other curious species congregate beneath the waves, luring divers from around the world for unique encounters with tame creatures. Naturalists also marvel at the annual migration of more than 100 million red crabs, which creates a crimson carpet from Christmas Island’s lush forests to the sea each year as the crustaceans seek to spawn. Exotic seabirds, wild orchids, towering palms -- an assortment of flora and fauna is found here, as more than 60% of this island is reserved as national parklands. An assortment of shore excursions and charter companies await here, too, serving cruise ship passengers looking for a day of wildlife watching.
