Constanta, Romania is perhaps more famous as Tomis, the city to which the Roman poet Ovid was sent in exile after he irritated the powers-that-be in the capital. Though he missed his native Italy and did not write favorably of the place, we trust you will find it much more charming. There is an art nouveau-style casino in the harbor, some ancient Greek ruins and interesting shops, parks and museums. Ovid’s statue stands in front of the entrance to the History Museum, which contains rare specimens of Roman and Greek glassware and sculpture.

Tomis was founded by Greek colonists around 600 B.C. and was later renamed by Emperor Constantine of Rome in honor of his sister. Constantine planned and fortified much of the city from 320 to 350 A.D. Many fascinating monuments remain in the streets of the historic peninsular area.
