Corfu is a classic Mediterranean beach paradise, with all the essential elements: sea, sand and sun. These draws make it one of most visited Greek islands, as well as one of the largest, but there’s a lot more to Corfu than that.

If you venture inland, you’ll find fragrant pine forests and charming villages such as Sokraki, a place seemingly frozen in time where you’ll be lucky to find anyone speaking a language other than Greek. Corfu Town, the island’s capital, is Greece’s largest occupied medieval town, with cobblestone walkways, fountains, statues and historic architecture. The Venetian-era Old Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In between all the sightseeing, try to find a moment to stop for lunch or drinks at the cafes along the French-style Liston Arcade and Esplanade.

Another historical site worth checking out is the lush 19th-century Achillion Palace. But if beaches are what you’re really looking for after all, the best are to be found in Paleokastritsa and Glyfada.
