The 80-mile stretch of sun-soaked coastline known as the Costa Maya receives more than 500,000 cruise passengers each year, all via its central port. Though many move on to other bustling resorts in the area, Puerto Costa Maya has become an attraction in itself. The centerpiece of this busy spot is its 70,000-square-foot entertainment complex, stuffed with restaurants, shops and tour guides. These guides offer any number of activities for visitors, but their primary goal is education -- they highlight Costa Maya’s modern conveniences, while encouraging visitors to seek information on its ancient cultures. Aside from the usual beach activities, Puerto Costa Maya offers a bit more family fare than competing resorts -- kids flock to attractions like Croc World and the Dolphin Dream Experience for hands-on interaction with exotic animals. Though the port’s attractions only will continue to grow -- boutique hotels, time-share tourist housing and an airstrip were recently added in the region -- locals hope to avoid the over-development of neighboring resorts to retain the region’s uniquely relaxed atmosphere.
