Another Caribbean island influenced by Dutch colonials, Curacao shares Aruba’s fondness for colorful architecture, sailing fleets and a welcoming, tourist-friendly atmosphere. The capital, Willemstad, offers all three: structures dating to the 18th century, a floating craft market and distilleries offering free samples of the island’s namesake liqueur. Fort Amsterdam, built in the 17th century to protect Willemstad from pirates and other enemies, is an interesting spot for tours; the old citadel now is home to the governor’s palace and the seat of government for the Dutch Antilles. The 1,500-year-old Arawak Indian paintings of the Hato Caves -- a former coral reef and cave system exposed by the receding ocean -- are another unique attraction for naturalists and history buffs alike.
