Eidfjord seems like a quiet fishing village at first glance, but this Norwegian port serves as the entrance to some wild attractions, including the country’s largest national park. Beyond the city’s 14th-century church and the Viking burial ground, visitors will find a staggering mountain plateau, Hardangervidda, that begs for exploration. Here, too, is the Hardangervidda Nature Center, which provides a number of ways to see sights both ecological and cultural. The most common activities are hiking and cross-country skiing over the hills, where reindeer, arctic foxes and snowy owls can be spotted, depending on the season. The Troll Train is another favorite, passing through the Mabodalen Valley to visit Voringsfossen, a colossal 500-foot waterfall.
