Eidfjord seems like a quiet fishing village at first glance, but this Norwegian port serves as the entrance to some wild attractions, including the country’s largest national park. Beyond the city’s 14th-century church and the Viking burial ground, visitors will find a staggering mountain plateau, Hardangervidda, that begs for exploration.

Here, too, is the Hardangervidda Nature Center, which provides a number of ways to see sights both ecological and cultural. The most common activities are hiking and cross-country skiing over the hills, where reindeer, arctic foxes and snowy owls can be spotted, depending on the season.
