Excursions to Florence and Pisa depart from the cruise terminal at Livorno, a bustling port city. It was developed in the 16th century by the Medicis, and its center has some nice bars, cafes and shops.

But most passengers head to the lovely Renaissance city of Florence, which is compact and easy to explore on foot. Marvel at the intricate marble facade of the city’s cathedral, known as Il Duomo, or browse the masterpieces on display at the Uffizi Gallery. Michelangelo’s famous “David” statue resides at the Galleria dell’Accademia. Gold and silver shops line the Ponte Vecchio, a bridge over the Arno River.

Choose an excursion that stops in the university town of Pisa for snapshots of its iconic leaning tower, which sits in the walled Piazza dei Miracoli along with a massive cathedral and baptistery. From Livorno you can also head to the Tuscan towns of Lucca and Siena, and perhaps to a local winery.
