Cruise passengers may have seen the view of the winding Geirangerfjord long before sailing it -- this nine-mile stretch of water is the most photographed area in all of Norway. But seeing the Geirangerfjord in person is an unforgettable experience, and one that guide books and cruise brochures can’t quite capture. Here, colossal cliffs cleave surging currents, and the waterfalls known as Bridal Veil and The Seven Sisters dwarf most passing ships. But Geiranger is a sight to behold, too. The first cruise ship to visit this resort town arrived in 1869, and word of mouth soon turned the region into a top vacation destination. Pine-covered hills, ancient glaciers and the Dalsnibba Mountain Plateau surround Geiranger, a true outdoorsman’s paradise. Kayak rentals are a big business here, as the town and its verdant surroundings are best seen (and photographed) from a paddling tour of the fjord.
