This small British colony sits at the southern tip of Spain’s Iberian Peninsula, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Cruisers will find good buys in glassware, china, leather, silk and cashmere in Gibraltar’s duty-free shops. Nature lovers can hike well-marked trails or keep an eye out for the many birds -- more than 230 species -- that can be spotted here.

Ride the cable car from the Grand Parade to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar for fantastic views of Algeciras Bay and the Moroccan mountains beyond. Or, spend time at the beach -- the prettiest is Catalan Bay, and it has some very good seafood restaurants. Gibraltar’s most famous residents are its Barbary apes, Europe’s only wild monkeys, and you can see them if you get off the cable car at the halfway station.
