Also known by its Inuit nickname, Nuuk, charming Godthab is the capital of Greenland and, with just 15,000 residents, the smallest capital city in the world. Two harbors welcome cruise ship passengers. Waterfront attractions are numerous, but many visitors head straight for the National Museum and Archives, where artifacts detailing 4,500 years of Greenland’s history -- including two 500-year-old mummies found in nearby Qilakitsoq -- are available for study. The University of Greenland also holds historic wonders; experts recently unearthed neo-Eskimo ruins that are now on display for the public. Our Saviors Church, an example of classic Nordic architecture, is another top stop at the center of town. Families also might be interested in a visit to Santa Claus’ house in downtown Godthab, where a large mailbox accepts last-minute gift requests from children both naughty and nice.
