Colorfully painted homes and quiet streets characterize this sleepy town in the heart of Norway’s fjordland. It lays claim to being the globe’s most northern town, at a latitude where the sun never sets between May 17 and July 28, and never rises between November 21 and January 23. A stroll around Market Square reveals the town hall and a museum, and the 1961 Lutheran church is strikingly modern, with a tent-shaped gable and large, stained-glass window. You can learn about traditional Sami culture, which is well preserved in the region. Mikkelgammen is a small Lappish cabin on Salen Mountain where you can try Sami cuisine and drink coffee brewed over a bonfire.
