This vibrant, cultured capital offers ballet, opera and a national theater on the southernmost tip of Finland. It’s a place of cosmopolitan wonders, where the best of northern Europe comes together in one lively port of call. It’s also a perfect city for day tours -- known as a “pocket-sized metropolis,” Helsinki is a compact, easily accessible spot along the Baltic Sea. Helsinki, like most cities on the sea, counts nautical pursuits among its amenities. Sailing, fishing and boating are enjoyed throughout the summer -- a series of waterfront festivals highlight these local hobbies as well as the region’s traditional music and dance. Other sights along the ocean include Suomenlinna, a 250-year-old fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site, and the onion-domed Uspensky Cathedral.
