On August 6, 1945, Hiroshima was the target of the first atomic weapon ever deployed in war. Today, the only building that remains from that day -- formerly the “Industrial Promotion Hall” -- has been dubbed the Atomic Bomb Dome, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which was the busiest commercial district in the city before the bomb, and an open field afterward. The Peace Flame there was lighted in 1964.
