This beautiful Croatian island on the Dalmatian Riviera is a popular destination for sightseers. To understand why, one need only glimpse the lush hillsides, lined with terra cotta-tile homes that overlook the yacht-filled harbor.

Medieval history and architecture color the landscape; one of the best spots to take it all in is from the hilltop fortress of Fortica. From here you can see not only Hvar but many of the surrounding islands in the Adriatic. Another impressive old edifice is the Bishop’s Palace, in St. Stephen’s Square near the cathedral of the same name. The 15th-century Franciscan monastery contains a fascinating museum well worth a trip.
