A small port town in Greece, Katakolon was founded in the 19th century to support the currant trade. It’s comprised of a few shopping streets and a picturesque waterfront lined with inviting outdoor eateries, but for most cruise passengers it serves as a gateway to Olympia, home of the original Olympic Games.

A picturesque settlement on the banks of the Alpheios River, Olympia is just a short ride from the port and the ancient stadium where, in 776 B.C., the first Olympic torch was lit, inspiring a tradition that has yet to burn out. This is still an intriguing place to wander; in the 45,000-seat arena you’ll find the marble starting blocks that the athletes used, and the ruins of temples to Zeus and Hera, the king and queen of the gods. The gold and ivory statue in the enormous Temple of Zeus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Besides the attractions of Olympia, the area around Katakolon is bountiful wine country, so if you have time, you may want to visit some vineyards and taste the local vintages.
