This Croatian island is reportedly the birthplace of that most famous of tourists, Marco Polo. Korcula’s Old Town is a 14th-century walled city whose medieval streets are arranged in a peculiar fishbone layout that shelters residents and visitors alike from the rays of the summer sun and the high winds. Exploring the town, you’ll find art galleries, monuments and palaces of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style.

Along the shores of the island you can discover many small and quiet beaches. One of the best may be Luka Korculanska, which can be reached by either a quick scenic boat ride from the main Old Town harbor, or a 15-minute walk.
