Kota Kinabalu, often known as simply K.K. by Malaysians, is a city on the island of Borneo that has dubbed itself the “Nature Resort City” because of the incredible natural preserves in the area. The biggest is Kinabalu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing a stunning variety of unique species and the majestic Mount Kinabalu, reaching 13,435 feet. Spectacular beaches are also a feature of the area, and the resort of Tanjung Aru has some of the best. For some more excitement and local color, try a tour of the stilted towns inhabited by a people who once earned a fierce and gruesome reputation as headhunters.
