Set in the Bay of Kotor, one of the most tucked-away inlets on the Adriatic Sea, is the ancient Mediterranean port of Kotor, Montenegro. Because it spent centuries under the rule of Venice, this beautiful seaside town still contains many fascinating examples of Venetian architecture and culture, as well as Austrian influence from the Hapsburg Empire that later took over. The Old City is encircled by thick fortified walls, which have been built and reinforced over millennia by civilizations from the Illyrian to the Roman to the Ottoman. Along with the town itself and the portion of the bay around it, the fortifications constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Impressive structures inside the walls include the 1166 Cathedral of St. Tryphon, one of Europe’s best surviving Romanesque sites. The stirring vistas of the Montenegrin countryside await those who travel inland. Rivers and underground streams flow through Durmitor National Park, which has the rough-hewn Balkan Mountains as its backdrop. One of the deepest gorges in the world, surrounded by dense forests of pine, Tara Canyon is sure to inspire wonder.
