Langkawi, an archipelago of 99 islands across the Straits of Malacca from the mainland, was formerly an enclave of pirates, but in modern times it has become one of Malaysia’s most popular beach resorts. Its sands are wonderfully unspoiled. Pulau Langkawi, the largest island, is home to crystalline lakes, rocky mountain peaks, rushing waterfalls and mysterious caves. The town of Kuah features duty-free shopping and is not far from the Mahsuri Mausoleum, named for a legendary local heroine said to be unjustly accused of adultery.
