The only town (and de facto capital) in Scotland’s scenic Shetland Islands, Lerwick is a hilltop locale once used to supply Denmark’s passing herring fleets. History is the major attraction for a new generation of ships, which stop here so that passengers can explore structures and farmlands dating to the early 18th century. Just outside town, newly discovered archaeological sites trace the islands’ history, going back more than 5,000 years of human settlement. In town, visitors will find a quaint destination. The village’s unique charm is rooted in its narrow streets, lined by a succession of family-owned pubs, restaurants and shops. Music is a central tenet of island life -- the Shetlands are known for energetic fiddle playing, and most pubs and street corners feature a busker or two who are happy to treat tourists to a song.
