This cosmopolitan capital, a hilly highlight of the sprawling Portuguese coast, is best explored through its three most popular neighborhoods. Baxia, the bustling downtown district, is known for its collection of shops and street cafes. Atmospheric Alfama, meanwhile, showcases Islam’s influence over Lisbon – Moorish architecture and winding, narrow streets inspire passing photographers. Bairro Alto, a favorite historic district, also boasts centuries-old structures and an Old World charm.

It’s easy to zip around Lisbon -- trains, buses and tourist charters are available almost everywhere, waiting to whisk visitors to museums, theaters and the national opera house. The Castle of São Jorge, a fortification that dominates much of the Lisbon skyline, also is a popular stop. The local nightlife is the stuff of legend, with nightclubs, bars and restaurants luring tourists out until the wee hours of the morning. And, of course, no trip to Lisbon would be complete without a trip to a small street café for a sip of port, the country’s favorite wine.
