Pablo Picasso was born in this Spanish city, and visitors can learn about the artist’s life at the Picasso Foundation. Other attractions include the castle known as the Alcazaba, built on the site of a Roman fortress between the eighth and 11th centuries, as well as a Roman amphitheater. A Moorish castle, Gibralfaro, is perched high above Malaga and offers terrific views from its ramparts. Malaga is a gateway to other Andalucian attractions, such as the whitewashed hilltop town of Mijas and the Caves of Nerja. Discovered in 1959, the vast underground galleries have the world’s largest stalagmites. If you are in port for a full day, you can make a trip to the Moorish Alhambra Palace in nearby Granada.
