This small island nation, sometimes called a “microstate,” lies in the Mediterranean just off the coast of Sicily. Despite its tiny size, it played a key role in many historical events. During the Crusades it was the stronghold of the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of Malta. And in World War II, the island was honored with a George Cross from King George VI of England for the citizens’ bravery under siege by the Axis powers. The capital and main port of Malta is called Valletta. The city is marked primarily by baroque architecture and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Notable buildings include St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the Grandmaster’s Palace, which houses most of the government offices. In addition to churches and palaces, one can see castles and minarets. Outside Valletta, cruise passengers can visit Mdina (the old capital of Malta, known as the “Silent City”) and Mosta, home of the world’s third-largest unsupported dome.
