This Amazonian city, more than 1,000 miles from the sea, is a surprisingly cosmopolitan spot. Though Manaus is surrounded by the primordial jungles of central Brazil, a 19th-century boom in the rubber business saw the city grow by leaps and bounds. Sprawling mansions, a crowded university and an opera house were added as the local economy grew. Today, the city still makes its living off the rain forest’s bounty -- most of the money comes from ecotourists, though, instead of the tree-harvesting ventures that flourished in the late 1800s.

Manaus offers the perfect springboard for exploration of the rain forest. Hiking and riverboat excursions are easy to find, as cruise companies and a number of local charter businesses lead expeditions into the jungle. One of the main attractions of a forest tour is the local breed of tamarin, a tiny, critically endangered primate found only around Manaus.
