Another tropical discovery of Christopher Columbus, Margarita Island has become a favorite destination for mainland Venezuelans in need of Caribbean relaxation. Cruise ship passengers will find a calming paradise, too, where white sands and turquoise surf grace pristine beaches -- Laguna de la Restinga National Park, for instance, holds both, in addition to countless species of colorful tropical birds, lizards and fish. History buffs find plenty to occupy their time here, with 17th-century treasures in Pampatar, the island’s oldest city, while Porlamar, Margarita Island’s largest city, offers Spanish colonial architecture in its market square. Those in need of pampering will find accommodation, too, with a number of tony resorts and cafes set along the northern coast.
