Marseille is France’s second largest city, and also its oldest -- it was founded by Greeks around 600 B.C. and later occupied by Romans. Often-visited sites include the Notre Dame de la Garde cathedral, perched at the top of a hill and built on the site of an old 13th-century chapel, and the 19th-century Palais Longchamp. The heart and soul of the city, however, is its colorful and picturesque old port, or Vieux Port.

While in Marseille, you can sample some of the local culinary specialties, such as the olive spread known as tapenade, the garlicky mayonnaise called aioli and, of course, a bowl of bouillabaisse, the classic fish stew that originated here.
