Although an earthquake in 1908 destroyed much of this Sicilian town, one important site did survive and is today a major attraction -- the Duomo, a 12th-century Norman church built by the oddly named Count Roger II. In more recent times, a unique astronomical clock was installed in the bell tower; it was made in Strasbourg in 1933 and sports a clock face that depicts the planetary system representing the days of the week.

The town center has more Norman churches, beautiful medieval fountains and an interesting museum. Some cruise passengers head to Mount Etna or to the charming hill-top town of Taormina, which overlooks the Bay of Giardini and has plenty of artsy shops, crafts studios and cafes hidden amid its narrow lanes. Taormina also has one of the world’s largest Greco-Roman theaters.
