Mytilene is the capital of the third largest Greek island, Lesbos, but locals sometimes refer to the entire island as Mytilene, which can confuse visitors. It’s famed as the birthplace of the brilliant ancient poet Sappho. Lying in the northern Aegean, just off the coast of Turkey, the island today is a major producer of olive oil and sardines, but there are also ruins going back thousands of years. Sappho’s hometown, Eresos, has beautiful volcanic sand beaches. Mytilene itself is well worth wandering around. It boasts some outstanding neoclassical buildings and has an excellent museum. There is also a variety of intriguing antique stores. Beyond town, you’ll find welcoming rural villages, castles and historic churches, and some beautiful rocky scenery. An important natural site is the petrified forest, one of the largest in the world.
