This tony Rhode Island city is famed for its seaside mansions. Few compare to The Breakers, a former home of the Vanderbilt family; this 70-room estate is an opulent testament to the United States’ early financial successes. The entire town, the longtime “summer cottage” getaway of a number of business magnates, serves as a snapshot of American ingenuity through the ages. Agritourism is another booming business for coastal Newport. Thriving vineyards join farm-fresh produce in outlying rural areas; many guided tours of the area feature a roundup of the city’s favorite wining and dining spots. Dozens of playhouses, art galleries and privately funded museums also offer a panoramic view of the region’s art scene. Naturalists, meanwhile, might head for a suburban wildlife sanctuary or botanical garden for a bird- or butterfly-watching tour.
