At the entrance to the sweeping Oldedalen Valley, the quiet town of Olden is a popular stop for visitors to Norway’s fjord country. Just outside its borders, a namesake lake offers a rich, green-watered retreat fed by the melting ice of the ancient Briksdal Glacier. Fishing and hiking can be done along the ice, though most visitors are content to take pictures of the flowing waters and craggy rock formations that frame this region.

Jostedal Glacier National Park Center offers a peek at Europe’s largest mainland glacier. Though a botanical garden and geological park also are here, visitors often are drawn to indoor exhibits tracing the growth of the ice floe. Other attractions near Olden include ski resorts and the Hornindalsvatnet, one of the deepest lakes on the continent.
