Tuna and tourism are the twin anchors of Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, where canneries and cruise ships share space along a twisting coastline. Scenic lures are obvious here, too, with swaying palm trees, tree-covered mountains -- including the volcanic central peak, Rainmaker Mountain -- and steep, rocky cliffs shading an azure harbor.

Actually pronounced “Pango Pango” by native Samoans, this city is the largest on the lush garden island of Tutuila. Its eastern neighbor, the village of Fagotago, offers a bustling central market area and a museum detailing local history. In between the two cities, sunny beaches, craft stalls and the former stomping grounds of British playwright Somerset Maugham invite and inspire intrepid travelers.
