A striking Gothic cathedral dominates Palma, the capital and cruise port of Majorca. It took some 500 years to complete the structure; beyond it you’ll find a maze of streets and alleys that reveal Palma’s Moorish influences. The unusual circular Castell de Bellver, an ancient fortress overlooking the bay, is also worth exploring. Over recent years, Palma has turned into a sophisticated resort town, where upscale shops neighbor authentic Balearic restaurants and traditional tapas bars. In the cafes along the Passeig des Born in the older part of town, you can sample the coiled pastries known as ensaimadas, a local specialty.
