Phu My is the cruise port for Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, the largest city in Vietnam. The city contains millennia of history but is perhaps most fascinating to Westerners because of its more recent past, as the home of American operations in the Vietnam War. Sights related to that history include the tunnels at Cu Chi, used by Viet Cong guerillas to smuggle personnel and supplies. These tunnels stretched all the way from Saigon to the Cambodian border. Saigon was known as the “Paris of the Orient,” and visitors can still see fine examples of French colonial architecture.
