The biggest island and perhaps the most famous resort spot in Thailand, Phuket was greatly affected by the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 but has since rebounded and is probably more popular than ever. It also is known for the quality of its diving. Karon Beach is one of the best spots for snorkeling. Local wildlife can be viewed at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project near the Bang Pae waterfalls, as well as at the Phuket elephant sanctuary, where you can ride one of these gentle giants and feed them bananas. A Thai massage is also a customary must-do at this island paradise.
