Mickey Mouse might be the de facto mascot of Orlando, but he’s not the only reason this city is known as a favorite family destination. A growing ecotourism market, easy beach access and, yes, even grown-up attractions have created a welcoming atmosphere in central Florida, with enough diversity (and Disney-free offerings) to entertain every taste. True, Orlando owes its prominence to the “House of Mouse,” which transformed the city from a suburban stretch of citrus groves into an entertainment empire. The company is represented here today by the four branches of the Walt Disney World Resort: the original Magic Kingdom, the futuristic Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney-MGM Studios. Mickey and friends also operate two water parks, six golf courses, a race track, an athletic complex and, for parents looking for a break, the Downtown Disney entertainment center.
