Cloud-covered mountains shroud this island, a French territory off the eastern coast of Madagascar. Rich volcanic soil feeds a vast array of plant and animal life; the same fertility nourished a variety of colonials over the years, including African, Chinese and Portuguese settlers. This mix of flora, fauna and foreign influences has created an intriguing, multicultural destination wrapped by the Indian Ocean.

Two active volcanoes anchor outdoor attractions in Reunion. On the eastern side of the island, the peak known as Piton de la Fournaise erupts almost annually; meanwhile, its sister volcano of Piton des Neiges is the highest point in the Indian Ocean. Three volcanic calderas, named for their caldron-like heat and appearance, also attract hikers looking for adventure.

The island’s capital, Saint-Denis, is a place of quiet reflection – small seaside shops and cafes offer outdoor seating and afternoon coffee, though the city’s main beach at St-Gilles-les Bains also is a relaxing spot. Another city staples, the Domaine du Grand Hazier, is an 18th-century sugar baron’s home with lush tropical gardens available for day tours.
