On Rhodes -- and especially inside the imposing walled Old Town, the largest inhabited medieval city in Europe -- you often get the feeling that time has been standing still for a millennium. This magnificent historical relic has helped make Rhodes the most popular tourist destination in the Dodecanese Islands. The proliferation of souvenir shops is an indicator of this destination’s popularity, but look past them to find the true wonders of Rhodes: atmospheric cobblestone streets, fantastic historical architecture and terraced restaurants as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate. Pedestrians can easily see all the main sights here: the 14th-century Palace of the Grand Masters and Hospital of the Knights of St. John, the 11th-century church that houses the Byzantine Museum and the 16th-century Mosque of Suleyman with its unique pink dome. Don’t miss the Turkish Market on Soukratos Street, where stalls sell all sorts of wares, from ceramics and rugs to valuable jewels and quaint knickknacks.
