The legislative and cruising capital of Latvia, lovely Riga is an appealing port for history buffs. Its walled Old City has weathered wars since the 12th century, enduring armed occupations from Polish, Swedish and Russian forces over the years. Latvia became an independent nation in 1991, but its charming mix of cultures has remained intact -- though fusion cuisine, Internet cafes and other Western influences are beginning to shape the city, Riga remains a unique destination on the eastern edge of the Baltic Sea. Riga’s central historic district has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving architectural wonders both medieval and nouveau. Memorials scattered throughout the city honor the battles waged to shape it. Art galleries, museums and an opera house also await. With so much to see, those looking for a quick study of Riga’s highlights can hop the Retro Tram, a vintage streetcar with stops at several landmarks.
