One of three popular resort islands off the northern coast of Honduras, Roatan is a favorite destination for cruise ships. Natural beauty abounds -- the island is encircled by a bountiful coral reef and covered in blooming botanical gardens and Caribbean-style, white-sand beaches. Jungle canopy tours, mountain hikes and other ecotourism pursuits are booming businesses. Trips to the Carambola Botanical Reserve or the Roatan Butterfly Garden often are paired with catamaran and snorkeling tours of neighboring coral gardens.
